Whether you are a beginner, not knowing where to begin. Or a seasoned veteran of singing. Knowing how to breathe correctly and where to breathe is the key to great singing.
The RISE technique logo

There are 3 parts to Air Flow. The first part is getting a good breath from the diaphragm. Go to a mirror and breathe in through your nose and then out of your mouth.
What moved? Shoulders, Chest, Stomach/Abdomen? Did you see the tension in your body?

It should have been your abdomen/stomach. Not your shoulders or chest. You want to be as relaxed as you can be. For example, a car with a full tank of gas in the tank will get you far. Same goes for your voice. A good breath from the diaphragm is the fuel behind everything you want to produce with your voice.

When you breathe in, the goal is to engage the diaphragm, not the chest. What is all included in singing?

  1. 36 supporting muscles, the major muscle of respiration is of course the diaphragm
  2. Your lungs
  3. Mental focus

The diaphragm is a thin skeletal muscle that sits at the base of your chest. It separates the abdomen from the chest. It contracts, lowers, and flattens when you inhale.
So the diaphragm lowers. The top of our belly pouches out and our lower belly goes in.
This contraction creates a vacuum, which pulls air into the lungs. Most of the time we do it without thinking about it. When you exhale, the diaphragm releases and returns to its dome-like shape. Air is then forced out of the lungs.

The diaphragm is in a constant state of recoil. It’s like a rubber band. Once you stretch that band, it will want to come back to its resting state and that is what your diaphragm wants to do too. Which pushes all the air out.

So when you sing and take that deep breath, it's about how you manage the recoil of the diaphragm. You do not want to let it recoil too fast. In other words… don’t let too much air escape.
Straw

SMALL STIR STRAW: Learing to feel your diaphragm

Using a small coffee stir straw. Use the straw to slowly breathe in.
What you should be feeling as your air goes is:
  • Your ribs expand sideways.
  • The downward push of the diaphragm
  • The outward push of your solar plexus/midsection. (Like your 9 months pregnant)
When you do this correctly you will get very consistent airflow and support to sing!! Not more in the beginning and less at the end. Same amount throughout.

Veterans... want an advanced technique?
Do the same thing as above but now you will want to add pressure to this.

Take that same straw and now slowly blow out the air into the straw. If you do it too strongly, you will blow out the straw. But if you create that pressure and slowly blow out in the straw. You now can feel what that “pressure” feels like. I call it “containing the air”
This all starts with good posture.  Make sure you are sitting up straight. Shoulders back and down. And you are looking forward. If you feel any tension or stress. Go back and re-set your posture. This leads us into the next section?
IMPROPER PLACEMENTS

TAKING CARE OF YOUR VOICE

Your voice is your instrument. It is important that you know exactly how to take care of it.
I have a saying... "?????? ???? ?? ???? ????? ?????'? ????? ?? ?????? ??????? ??? ?? ??????."
OFFER WATER

Did you know that the vocal cords are the last part of your body to get hydrated? Don't wait until your throat feels dry to start chugging water!  Once it feels dry, you are already dehydrated. If you want your vocal cords hydrated for Sunday. Start on Monday. Hydrate your body properly each day. WHY? Dehydration can cause the vocal cords to lose flexibility. It can then be an easy target for damage.

Eat this NOT that
  • ??????, ??????, ice cream, and other dairy products. Dairy can create phlegm and that gets in the way of your natural tone.
  • ????? ????? can cause acid reflux and irritate your vocal cords. Then You may need to clear out your throat, which can inflame and damage vocal folds
  • ???????? ?? ? ????????.  This means it makes you go to the restroom more often. And it dehydrates your vocal folds. Your voice needs to stay lubricated in order to work well.
  • ?????? these foods before you sing...Foods that are natural and easily digested. Food is your fuel--that's why it's directly related to
your ability to produce vocal power!

When you're young it is easy to push your body to its limits, but we want sustainability. Rest is crucial!

If you have been practicing for over 15 mins and you find yourself "pushing" to make things happen. ???? you need a break. You don’t want to get hoarse or damage your vocal cords! Or worse... get hoarse before the end of your set.

Get a good night's sleep before you sing. If you wake up with a “frog” in your throat you might have experienced acid reflux. Consider raising the top part of your bed to avoid the acid from sitting on your vocal cords while you sleep. Gross, I know, but it is very common and very damaging.

Essential oils

Sometimes our bodies need natural remedies to help us with respiratory support. Whether it is seasonal allergies or asthma. If you want to know more click the button for my ?? on these things.

Many people leading worship overlook warm-ups! Especially if you are naturally talented. NBA players are naturally gifted too, but you will always find them warming up and preparing for every game. This helps to avoid injury. Warm-ups don’t have to be complicated. Do it from home In the shower, before you head out IN your car...which is what I did often. The Basic 5 note ascending, descending scale on the vowel eeShape your mouth like an “o” but sing “ee” ??

Posture is important cause we don't want to cut off our air supply!!????? on the ???? ??????? ??????? ?? ???????? ??? ???.
