- Where are you placing your sound?
- Where do you feel the vibration/sound?
- What part of the head is vibrating?
The goal of warm-ups and vocal techniques is to get to know where the sound is vibrating in your head.
Where should you feel it?
Once you get to know your body. And where the proper vibration of the sound should be. Then we can practice it over and over again. To make it stick in the "muscle memory"
That will be a well of knowledge that we can pull from when we need to replicate it in a song.
Honestly, we cannot trust what we hear in our heads. We have to trust the vibration; when we are doing the proper technique.
Singing with your throat is not nice. It is really a harsh sound. so cultures it is what their sound is. However, if you sing with your throat all the time, it'll end up being sore and you can damage it. Singing through the throat will stop you from holding out the notes and singing longer phrases. You can see James Brown below where he has to stop.
Put your hand in front of your mouth while you are talking. Do you feel the airflow coming out of your mouth? If you do not feel it at all or feel it on occasion. It might be a sign that you have a bit of a grovel/throat sound.
James Brown has a grovel trait. Click Here to listen.
It's really an improper placement. This nasal trait is when there is a lot of air coming through the nose. However, some modern vocals will use it for style. Below is a link for Urkel who was known for speaking through his nose.
Here is a way to know if you don't have a balance.
Count to 10. When you reach 5 plug your nose. You should not hear a difference at all in your speech. If you do, you have too much air coming through your nose.
