The Holy Grail for singers is the ability to sing without strain and tension. Throughout your entire range. Finding freedom, powerful, resonant, and vulnerable sound. Simple right????
Hahah. When my students are singing and coming up to a note they struggle with it. I can hear it. I hear the doubt. I hear the anxiety in their voice. That too is tension!
Emotions are the body's response to the thoughts that arise in our minds. If you never feel anxious about what sound was going to come out – it’d be amazing!
We all have whispers of doubt. And many of us have had some sort of criticism spoken over our voices. I had one too many instructors/WL try to tell me I don’t have what it takes. But...what has God said? What has He promised you?
If you know deep down this is what God has called you to do. Then you need to stand. Do NOT agree with those previous voices. It has to stop. Tell it to go, in Jesus' name.
Seriously, you have that authority. If not it will cause you to push and reach for the notes. It will create emotional turmoil.
Sometimes the things that improve our singing the most have nothing to do with singing at all. No technique, no amount of practice, or anything we can "do". If you know what I mean. There comes a time when you have done all that you need. And then you gotta just "be" who God says you are and let Him do the "doing".
This couldn’t be more true when it comes to the standards we set for ourselves. Perfectionism is the thief of good singing. We all want to sound good but at what point does that tip more towards perfectionism or performance?
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF-
- Do I set standards waaaaay higher and more demanding for myself? Then the standards I apply to my friends/colleagues/family?
- Do I ever find that I have all-or-nothing thinking? Where do I see “almost perfect” as a failure?
- Do I ever have difficulty taking pride in my accomplishments? I am so focused on tiny perceived mistakes or imperfections. That I have trouble acknowledging the larger achievement?
