The other part of the equation to effortlessly hit the higher notes and extend your range.
Step 4 is Space
Space or height in the vocal track. In other words, is the ability to lift your soft palate, while you are singing. Some people call it an internal smile others ask you to "raise your eyebrows". I call it SPACE. Give the sound room to freely roam lol!
Space must be used in conjunction with placement. When both are functioning together, it creates that RICH and BEAUTIFUL tone.
So what is the soft palate?
The soft palate is the muscular flap located at the back/ roof of the mouth, where the uvula is. This muscle has two main functions. It raises high and spreads either wide or narrow within the vocal tract.
So how do you do it? A gentle yawn or inhaling from the tongue position of a "K" consonant sound. This can show you what it feels like to raise your soft palate.
The third honorary function of the soft palate is The Velarpharyngeal Port. This port opens and closes off the airflow to the nose. Try breathing in through your nose only - this is the Velar Port "open". Now try breathing in through your mouth only - this is the Velar Port "closed".
On vowel sounds, the Velar Port is "closed" so that there is no airflow through the nose. The soft palate raises and moves through a number of changes in size and width through each register.
(neutral, wider, narrowing, narrow as we sing through Chest, Chest Mix, Head Mix, Head respectively).
So when you are approaching a higher note, instead of reaching for it. Get a good breath and lift your soft palate. Making a narrow, vertical space. As you go higher, you will have to drop your jaw.
